Our Founder's Story: From Survival to Safe Spaces
SafeVoices Kenya isn't just an organization; it is a mission born out of lived experience. Our founder, Janeth Jepleting, understands the pain of vulnerability firsthand. Born into a large family in Nandi County, Kenya, she was forced out of school and into domestic servitude as a househelp at just 14 years old after escaping a forced arranged marriage. Shortly after, she became a young mother.
Despite the immense hurdles, Janeth refused to let her circumstances define her dreams. Saving small amounts from her earnings and walking door-to-door to raise school fees, she fought her way back into education, eventually moving to Nairobi, earning a diploma, and completing her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Her resilience culminated in moving to California, USA, where she earned her Master’s degree in Public Policy from.
Having navigated the darkest corners of systemic vulnerability and silence, Janeth founded SafeVoices Kenya to ensure that other women and girls do not have to fight alone. Living in the United States while anchoring her operations in Kenya, she bridges global resources with local grassroots actions. SafeVoices Kenya is her promise to turn survival into empowerment, giving every vulnerable girl a safe space to raise her voice and reclaim her future.
